Niš
Nis is a great place to relax and enjoy the urban Balkan experience. The third largest city in Serbia offers many historical monuments, museums and archaeological sites. The city has an active shopping district and great places to eat and drink. Niš is also home to several very popular events like the annual international film festival in August.

Regions

North Serbia
Vojvodina is the northern part of Serbia. This part consists of the regions of Backa, Srem and Banat. The rivers Danube, Tisa and Sava pass through this largely flat area. In this region there are charming towns such as Novi Sad, many of which have preserved its baroque heritage. The biggest part consists of villages of Vojvodina and farmland with large fields of sunflowers, wheat and other crops.

Central Serbia
The region south of Belgrade is the heart of Serbia, where tourism is highly developed. Here are many hills and low mountains. It is the place where Serbian kings had built their capitals, but also where they built the most beautiful monasteries of Serbian Orthodoxy. The festivals of folklore and gypsy music, as the Guca Festival, give this area a particular charm.

Western Serbia
Western Serbia has a varied landscape: the plains of Macva lie in the north, while the rest is covered by mountains and high plains. Its lower regions are famous for their orchards (try to test a sljivovicalocal!). The mighty river Drina provides wonderful views and beautiful national park surrounding the Tara Mt. He advises visitors to see the medieval monasteries in the area.

Eastern Serbia
An excellent area for adventure tourism. The mountainous region is made of numerous planes wedged and many water sources. There are several caves in the mountains that are open to tourists. This part of Serbia offers many unique itineraries in the wilderness. Various locations and Roman historical as Caricin Grad Gamzigrad are among the major tourist attractions in Serbia. Moreover, the town of Nis is a good example of this story because it has traces of the Ottomans and Romans.

The wide variety of beautiful landscapes, cultural monuments and historical sites, health spas and areas for hunting and fishing are major attractions for tourism in Serbia. Serbia borders with Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina to the west, Albania, Montenegro and Macedonia (former Yug R. de.) South, Bulgaria and Romania to the east and Hungary to the north.

Country Profile

Landscape

Serbia is situated in two different geographical parts of Europe. The northern part of the republic consists of the Central European lowlands while the southern part has hills and mountains. More than 15 mountain peaks rising to over 2,000 meters above sea level.

Serbia offers a wealth of natural sites, including five national parks. The main navigable rivers are the Danube, Sava and Tisa. The Danube, Europe’s longest river, runs through almost 600 km of the country. In Serbia a moderate continental climate predominates, and this is more Mediterranean in the south.History
Servia lands have always been the point where it crossed several civilizations, with different spiritual influences, architectural, artistic and cultural. Several prehistoric and classical monuments represent some unique examples of the changes over time. Serbia is still a land of natural contrasts, historical, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Serbia and Montenegro formally declared themselves independent of each other after a referendum in Montenegro in May 2006 on independence. The southern province of Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in February 2008. Some countries recognize this independence and oppose others, including Serbia itself.

Major Cities

Belgrade
Belgrade (or Beograd) is the capital and the “soul” of modern Serbia. It is situated at the confluence of the Sava with the Danube. During its long history the city has been destroyed and rebuilt several times. Today is a modern city of about 2 million inhabitants. Belgrade offers visitors a rich program of cultural events, arts and sports, as well as museums and monuments.

Novi Sad
Novi Sad is one of many multi-ethnic cities in Serbia, and is the capital of the Vojvodina region in the north. This city has a charm, a culture and nightlife similar to those of the capital, but on a smaller scale and personal. Novi Sad is a perfect combination of urban sophistication and bohemian relaxation. Novi Sad each year attracts visitors from around the world to the EXIT music festival in July.
